Breeder Questions

Breeder Questions

How long have you been involved with this breed? Can you provide me with references? We've been involved with the breed for over 11 years now.  Kim is a former president of the Chinook Owners Association.
What are your goals in breeding? We look to breed healthy chinooks with good temperments and a great work ethic.
Do you work or show your dogs? Have they earned any titles or been evaluated in their ability to perform traditional activities such as pulling a sled, rig, a person on skis or backpacking? Are your dogs involved with agility, obedience or therapy work? Do they have Canine Good Citizen certification? We both work and show our dogs.  In terms of working, this can involve just daily walks, cani-cross, ski-jouring and even sledding, when we can.  Our dogs have also participated in agility and all have their Canine Good Citizen certificates.
Will the litter be evaluated for conformation and temperament testing by an expert in these areas? Yes !  The litter will be evaluated before any puppies are placed.
Do you breed your dogs to the U.K.C. standard? Do you register all your puppies with this organization? Yes, we breed to the UKC standard and register all of our dogs with the UKC
Will the puppy be DNA-profiled or the litter DNA-parent-verified? Yes, all puppies are DNA-profiled.
Have the parents passed an OFA evaluation and a CERF evaluation? At what ages? Yes, the parents have all had both hip and eye evaluations.  Please check the invididual dog's pages for information.
Do you have a breeder/purchaser contract? What is covered in this contract (health, spay/neuter, breeding, state laws)? Yes, we have a contract that covers such things as health testing, spay/neuter and breedings.  Contact us if you'd like to see a sample contract.
Do you have a signed code of ethics by your parent club? Yes, we conform to the COA's code of ethics.
Can I see the parent dogs' papers, pedigrees, titles, certificates and all contracts before I purchase a puppy? Of course !  All information will be made available to potential puppy owners.
Can I physically see the parents or receive photos? Can you tell me about the litter's ancestors and siblings? We'd be happy to have visitors to see our dogs.  Seeing both parents may be more difficult as they may not live that close together.
Do you take back or provide rescue for any or all puppies you sell? Is there an age limit? Our contract states that we will take back any dog, regardless of age.
How do you decide which puppy goes to which home? The puppies are evaluated for temperment and breeding quality.  We then try to match the puppy to the needs and desires of the potential puppy owners.  This is sometimes difficult for new owners to understand as we don't allow owners to "pick" their own puppy.  If you'd like more information about this, please feel free to contact us.
What long-term contact do you maintain with owners of Chinooks you have bred? We wish to remain in contact with our puppy owners for the lifetime of the dog, and beyond.  The Chinook community is a very close group, with breeders and owners often sharing advice, tips, and stories.  This is one of the real advantages of owning a chinook!
What support do you provide for a new owner? What do I need to know when I bring my puppy home (food, crate, vaccinations)? We want to provide as much support as a puppy owner would like.  We'll provide full information about what you need before bringing your puppy home a few weeks prior to the date.
What are the positive and negative aspects of owning a Chinook? The are so many positivie aspects about owning a Chinook as well as many things you should know about the breed.  For all of this information, check out the Chinook Owners Association website.
